You just can’t beat the hiking trails in the Lakeland area of Minocqua, Arbor Vitae and Woodruff. With so many lakes and streams and lush forests, there’s plenty to see if you want to get outside and hike around the area.
There are trails to suit all ability levels, some are pet-friendly, and some are ideal for birders. Wind your way through the lakes and trees, keep and eye out for deer and listen for the sound of the loons on the water. Whether you’re looking for a short hike just to get in a little cardio workout or a longer hike where you pack your lunch and plenty of water, you’ll have no trouble finding the perfect trail.
The nearby Northern Highland - American Legion State Forest (NHAL) provides unlimited opportunities for hiking and has unbelievable scenery. NHAL is the largest of Wisconsin’s state forests with nearly 223,000 acres.
Popular hiking trails include Bearskin Trail, Escanaba-Pallette Lakes Trail, Fallison Lake Trail, Lumberjack and Madeline Lake Trail.
The Fallison Lake Trail is quite hilly but scenic, and offers short to moderate loops, from half a mile to two-and-a-half miles in length. It offers a spectacular view of Fallison Lake and there are booklets on wildlife, flora and historical perspectives available from the DNR Trout Lake Office and at the trail head from mid-May to mid-September. You will also find interpretive labels along the trail. Biking and pets are not allowed on Fallison Lake Trail.
Lumberjack Trail is an easy to moderate hiking option that connects with the Escanaba Trail. It winds along the Manitowish River, the Fishtrap Flowage and White Sand Lake, and will take you through a variety of timber types. Lumberjack offers 3 loops ranging in length from four to 12.5 miles.
