The Lakeland area of Minocqua, Arbor Vitae, Woodruff and surrounding communities is one of the snowmobiling capitals of the world. Local snowmobile clubs and volunteers have created and maintain an extensive snowmobile trail system that’s more than 1600 miles long. Trails extend through glacial lakes and public forest lands and showcase the best of the area’s natural beauty.
The trail system and pristine forests combined with an average of 65-inches of annual snowfall make for some of the best sledding in the north woods. You’ll find a number of trail pit stops where you can stop, warm up, and enjoy the local hospitality. Trail maps are available through local outfitters or the chamber of commerce.
Wisconsin law requires registration of all snowmobiles, funds from which program are used to maintain trails and cover any costs related to snowmobile recreation. Be sure to check Wisconsin state regulations if you’re bringing your own sled from out of state. Rental sleds will be properly registered by the outfitter.
There are a number of snowmobile clubs in the area that offer weekly group rides, host events for members, help maintain trails and more.
And don’t miss the Snowmobile Museum and Hall of Fame nearby in the town of St. Germain. The museum was created in 1985 and features historic photos, memorabilia, and plaques commemorating all Hall of Fame inductees. The museum has more than 60 historic sleds in its collection. It also hosts the annual Ride with the Champs event, which is a 175-mile ride for both late model and vintage snowmobiles that attracts enthusiasts from all over. There’s also the Classic Sled Roundup, which is a snowmobile show that happens in the spring and features vintage sleds.
