Minocqua is part of the Lakeland area, which includes the towns of Arbor Vitae and Woodruff. Other nearby communities includes Manitowish Waters, Lac du Flambeau, Hazelhurst, Three Lakes, Eagle River and Lake Tomahawk. The combined population of Vilas and Oneida Counties is just over 50,000 residents.
The Lakeland area is home to over 1000 lakes and more than 200,000 acres of state forest land as well as numerous streams, brooks and rivers. In this area are hundreds of resorts, hotels, motels, vacation rental homes, cabins and cottages.
The picturesque “Island City” of Minocqua is situated in Oneida County and is surrounded by lakes. The close-knit community of Minocqua is home to just under 5000 year-round residents, and is located in the heart of Wisconsin’s north woods, right off Highway 51 and is conveniently just a few hours from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
Nearby Woodruff is home to about 2000 residents and is known for having the world’s largest penny. The penny is made of concrete and weighs over 17,000 pounds. Manitowish Waters is a small community of under 1000 people which is known as an artists' enclave. Manitowish is home to a water ski team, the Skiing Skeeters, who perform free shows two nights a week throughout the summer and may be rivals of Minocqua’s Min-Aqua Bats.
Lac du Flambeau is the land base of the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. It’s home to about 3000 residents and the George W. Brown Jr. Ojibwe Museum.
